Peas Please.
Whether or not you like green peas (I don’t) they do have a good amount of nutritional value. Peas are high in fiber, protein, vitamins and lutein. Surprisingly 1 cup of peas has a whopping 8.6 grams of protein. We vegetarians are always looking for additional sources of protein so I was pretty amazed to find out that little nugget of info. Generally I know a good bit about the health benefits of vegetables but having never cared for the PEA I had never researched them. Peas are also high in fiber with approximately 18 grams in a cup. So does that make me want to nosh away?
There is no way, no how that I am ever going to sit down to a whole cup of peas even with butter and salt and pepper (I know people who do just that). But, these little morsels are not half bad when combined with pungent flavors like cumin, ginger, green chili peppers and lemon juice. Stuff them inside some sweet potatoes and dip them into a minty, cilantro chutney and you’ve got yourself a tasty snack.
I found this recipe in a cookbook titled The Asian Vegan Kitchen. The actual recipe calls for regular white potatoes but the sweet potato has more flavor and it’s orangey color blends well with the bright fresh green of PEAS.
Recipe adapted from – The Asian Vegan Kitchen
1 package frozen sweet potato patties, thawed
For the Pea mixture
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 inch fresh ginger chopped
1 fresh green chili pepper chopped
1 cup peas frozen thawed
1/4 garam masala
1/4 cayenne pepper (optional)
1/2 tablespoon fresh cilantro chopped
lemon juice to taste
Flour for dredging
Thaw the potato patties and set aside while you prepare the pea mixture. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a skillet. Add the cumin seeds, chilies, ginger and cilantro let saute about a minute. Add the peas, garam masal and the cayenne if using. Add the lemon juice to taste along with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat.
Take the thawed yam patties and place on a dry surface. Flatten them out some and press an indentation in the center. You will want to be very gentle with the patties so that they don’t fall apart. Place some of the peas mixture in the center and start bringing the edges toward the center to form into a ball. They may be a little difficult to pick up. Lightly oiling you hands will help. Dredge the balls in flour. Pour just enough oil in the bottom of a fry pan to cover the bottom. Fry the patties until golden brown on both sides. Serve with your favorite chutney.

Oh wow!! I would be all over these – seriously. They’re gorgeous and I love the idea of doing an all in one side (starch & non-starchy veggie). Pinned :)
Wow, what a nutritious & delicious sounding recipe. I love yams! And peas! Yay. Thanks for sharing.

What a perfect snack or lunchtime accompaniment. Peas are one of the more filling vegetables and make a great lunch with which to recharge. These look delicious and convenient, Suzi!
These are beautiful, flavorful and so unique – I’ve never seen this done with sweet potatoes before and what a brilliant way to scarf down peas! Love this. I am featuring this post in today’s Friday Food Fetish roundup (with a link-back and attribution), but please let me know if you have any objections. I’m new to your blog, but it’s a pleasure to be following your creations…
Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving that lovely comment. Also how fabulous of you to feature these Sweet Peas Stuffed Sweet Potatoes on your Fridy Food Fetish roundup. That is so cool of you. I have been out of town and am just getting back with my readers. I just love that you have found my site, I am going to hop on over and check it out. Thank you.
I also learned about great nutritious value when I was making baby food back then. Before that I thought they are always convenient vegetable (frozen and green color) that you enlighten your food, but now I know they are actually good for you! I love sweet potatoes and this sounds like a great snack or side dish/appetizer for kids. I didn’t know there are frozen sweet potato patties.
Are sweet potato patties commonly found in my grocery store, or do I need to go to an India grocery (we have plenty around me)? Is there anything about the already-prepared patties that I would be missing if I just mashed my own sweet potatoes to form around the peas?
Hi Stephanie, thanks for stopping by. I found them in the frozen section of my local grocery store. You can also make them using fresh sweet potatoes but I would bake them as opposed to boiling the, less moisture.
i don’t MIND peas but I would never sit down and just eat them on their own. These patties sound like the perfect way to eat my peas and be more than happy about it!
this is an awesome idea! love it!
The spice combination in this filling sounds fantastic!
Actually sweet potatoes are something I don’t really enjoy but these orange patties actually look appealing to me! I do love peas as long as they are NOT canned! OMG serve me canned peas and the toddler in me comes out. BLECK! I’ll be giving these fresh peas a try. :)
Interessting recipe Suzi. I love veg stuffed dishes, never fails to satisfy me needs and wants. I am sure my husband would love your patties. thanks a lots for sharing Suzi!

Hi Suzy-just notice you’re on top 9….congratulations, well deserved!
Thanks Elisabeth for the congrats.
Just love your creative and delicious peas stuffed sweet potato patties. I would certainly want to make this for a delicious side dish, or just by itself.
Thanks for sharing:DDD
I had no idea they were so good for you! I’m not a big fan either, so I always dress them up in something else like shepherd’s pie or fried rice!
Oh my gosh this looks amazing and so creative too!
This is a new one! It looks delicious! I’ve never seen or worked with frozen sweet potato patties so I’m having a hard time seeing how to roll a sweet potato slice into a ball, but I guess I will have to buy some to find out. Great idea and beautiful presentation Darlin! Congrats on the Top 9!
Love these flavors.
Suzi, I always find something enchanting and unique on your site. Not to mention healthy. Love these delights!
Congrats on the Top 9! Yummy
Congrats on Top 9!
I do like peas, so this looks like a delicious recipe to me!
What a yummy, interesting way to get the non-veggie eater to eat his veggies! Looks great, congrates on top 9!
What a fabulous idea Suzi! I can’t wait to try this recipe.
These sound and look fabulous!
Two of my favorite things…green peas and sweet potatoes. I’m making these soon!
I’m so glad you found a way to make peas palatable! What a delicious side dish :)
I am the same way with peas! The same bag has been in my freezer for years… I use it to ice my knees.
What a fantastic idea! I love yams, but never had stuffed patties. I would adore these :)
I actually LOVE green peas. What a colorful, flavorful vegan appetizer!
This looks really yummy…
I make potatoes stuffed with peas but this is far more healthy…
totally bookmarked!!
Aw thanks Reem for the lovely comment.
This really looks incredible Suzi!! I would eat those peas as is… but stuffed into the yam pattie… you’re a genius!!
PS… I am handing out awards to Everyone and you really deserve one.. so check out my blog post today. :)
I love peas, even canned peas. These are so creative! I can’t wait to try the recipe.
These look lovely and I could have spoonfuls of peas! These would be great with a green chutney. Yum!
Thanks. What ingredients do you use for green chutney. I used cilantro and mint.
I also add 1-2 cloves of garlic, 1-2 green chillies (depending on heat), a dash of lemon and a few roasted peanuts or Bengal grams to the mint and cilantro and blitz them in the grinder. You can add a drizzle of olive oil if you wish to. You will have a chutney bursting with flavours!
Oh I like the idea of the roasted peanuts, I will try that the next time I make the chutney. Plus I didn’t add any olive oil, I wish had. Thanks for the tips.
Peas aren’t my favorite either, but you sure made them look good. I think you made an excellent choice using sweet potatoes also.
Oooooh! Yummy! I’m coping this recipe. :D
I’m amazed at the number of people who *don’t* like green peas… I mean, what’s not too like? They’re cute and sweet :D. These remind me of something my mother used to make with regular potato called “potato cakes”, though I never thought of stuffing them before – it’s like an easier version of a croquette – looks yummy :)
I’m not a crazy pea lover but making this will definitely be a sure way to get me to eat my veggies!
These remind me of Potato patties which we eat with chickpeas. But your green pea stuffing makes it more delicious.
These look fab. Oddly I like peas but I never seem to eat them. We grew up eating a ton of veggies. Peas, corn and carrots were staples here. But they were always canned. This makes me want to go get some yams and stuff them right quick.
Hey Kim. I grew up eating the canned veggies also and the look of the off color green of the peas made me want to gag. Must be why I don’t like them. The fresh or frozen ones sure do look pretty but I still don’t like them. Not too bad stuffed the yams though, LOL.
I can’t wait to try these! They would make a wonderful lunch, side or snack!
And your photos are great! Allen.
I am sure the flavors of this are wonderful but I have to say I am really loving the colors
How creative of you to come up with these! The addition of the peas makes these healthier and takes away from the heaviness in the amount of starch in the patties. We always like to have an additional layer of flavor with sweet potatoes and green peas is a nice alternative to the standard sweet sugar or syrup. Well done, now I want a few and I will not feel guilty about eating them!
These look super delicious :D
I am a huge sweet pea fan!
Cheers
Choc Chip Uru
I’m not a pea lover myself, but my wife is.
However, I would totally gobble these!
They sort of remind me of a veggie version of a knish. YUM!
Hey Jen, I have never made a knish, are they made from white potatoes, yes? That sounds good with veggies.
